The Artist

shelby mcquilkin

Hi, and welcome to my blog!  I’m so happy you stopped by.  My name is Shelby, and I’m an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York.  “My Story” about how I became an artist and found my way to Denver can be found in the About Me section of my website.

Although I never attended an art school, I can’t say that I’m self-taught.  While living in Denver I had the opportunity to learn and paint with some of the most talented artists there.  I’m so thankful for each of the people who have helped me find my way.

In my blog, you’ll see me refer to “The Director” my son who is a young filmmaker, and “The Composer”, my husband who is a musician/songwriter.  It’s just the three of us.  Interesting note: each one of us is an “only child,” and I think sometimes we act like siblings!  All three of us are artists in our own field, and that makes for an interesting home life in so many ways!

It’s my hope that my artwork and my blog will be a blessing to you, and that you’ll find something that encourages or inspires you.

Feel free to contact me for any reason!

  1. Hi Shelby,

It’s been years since I’ve seen you or your work. Paul and I now live in PA and are in the Rockies for a short time. In the past year I’ve now and then popped in on your website and each time I fill up with emotion at the beauty, inspiration and love you are expressing through your artwork. Several times I was moved to silence and another time to was gifted with a mini celebration experience (Alone, Tribes, Together, and a few of the Angel pieces). Thanks for risking to put the brush to the canvas day after day, Shelby.

I’m so proud of you for cultivating the craft your soul was inviting you to explore when we first met. You dove in with openness, eagerness, discipline and dedication taking many risks in spite of sometimes difficult life circumstances. I’m confident you are an inspiration to many, Shely! The world needs more artists who listen deeply and dare to follow their souls leading. I’d appreciate hearing your reflections on your journey over these past 6-7 years. Can only imagine the plethora of edgy, lonely, rich and wonderful stories.

It would be great to see you and visit your studio, Shelby. When I’ve shared a few paintings with Paul, he agreed that he is very drawn to your work and wants to see your work while we’re in CO. When might that be possible?

Shelby, how are those two dear men in your life? They come to mind now and then when I’m enjoying quality film or music. The world is certainly a better place for the inspiring work your threesome offers the world!

On this gorgeous CO day, may you be granted your hearts longing (known or unknown).

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

    With gratitude,

PS: We’re at our cabin in Fairplay coming to Denver for the day. Please try connect with me by phone or text initially as for the first time we are experiencing sketchy internet service. Maybe from so much rain, who knows? I’m in town now meeting clients with a clear connection and doing errands.

    • Vicki, thank you so much for such a sweet note. I’m hoping you see this. I don’t have your phone number or I would call. You can contact me at 720-266-0116. We would love to see you! I’ll try reaching you on Facebook as well.
